I heard that there is some security threat inside the JPEG pictures. How serious is it? I have Windows XP installed on my desktop computer, should I be concerned about it?
I dont understand how can an image contain a virus and what harm it can do to the system. I have a lot of images on my computer and I dont want to get infected and have to delete them all. How can I get this infection by JPEG? Surfing the net or receiving email?

You didnt give me some crucial data so I cant tell you how exposed you are. For example if you are having Service Pack 2 installed on your computer you should be pretty safe from them (jpegs). If not then its time to do some critical updating of your system. Also even if you have SP2 but you are using not patched Office, you are at danger.
This viruses attached with jpegs can cause virtually any kind of damage as the normal viruses does. Pictures are just enabling some code to be activated without your notice and this potentially could be any kind of code. Infection can happen on internet, opening email or even copying files to your computer.
You can run your favorite virus programs to check if you already have some viruses and delete them. If you dont have anti virus program installed, finding a good virus program is essential for your security. Anti virus programs can save you from making mistake that you cant undone, and keep you more informed about threats.
Also be sure to update your Anti virus program regularly and you will be safe as you can be.
