|

First, I uninstalled the secondary IDE channel device using the Device Manager because I had problems detecting the DVD-ROM drive, but that didn't help now every time I restart it's got an exclamation mark next to it, and I get an error message saying "There was a problem installing this hardware: An error occurred during the installation of the device. The driver is not intended for this platform." In the meantime, I managed to get the DVD detected (unrelated to this issue, I think), but now I don't know how to re-enable the IDE channel. Any help would be appreciated.

Do your IDE channels get recognized properly in BIOS, but not in the OS itself? If so, it is possible you had the DMA thing, just like a friend of mine
The way I understand it, when you mess with certain working hardware (such as you did), it is possible that Windows will preventatively turn off the DMA mode for it. (It also happens after repeated DMA errors.) This, I think, causes error messages like the one you report. You'll have to re-enable DMA for your IDE channel manually, by editing the registry. Detailed instructions can be found here: michna.com/kb/tools/resetdma.vbs. Good luck!
