It still works with DVDs – reads and burns, as well as it did on day one. However, no CD I put in gets more than a cursory spin, so it remains unread. This is a new development, and I have no idea what might have caused it. More importantly, I want it to go back to the previous state, because this is the only optical drive I have. Any suggestions?

I don't know what might've been the cause, but this kind of unorthodox behavior is usually driver related, at least IMX. You didn't mention what model drive you have, but I'm sure Samsung's got updated support for it. Go to their site, locate and download the drivers (just make sure it's the right model, it can be tricky with DVD drives sometimes), and see if it helps any.
