I would like to change partition 2 (D:\) into D:\ and E:\, making the original partition in two equal pieces. Can this be done within windows, or do I have to buy some special software to do this operation? Do I have to back up all the stuff from the partition? It’s about 15% free, and I’d need some 20 DVDs to back it all up…

As far as I know, it’s not possible to do this in Windows, without using some special program. I’d recommend you to buy Partition Magic, as it’s easy to use even for beginners. Also, you should backup all your data in any case. Operations with partitions sometimes result in data loss.
