How is this even possible? I won't quote the message here, because I already deleted it, but it was most definitely spam, delivered into my inbox, with my own email address (the same one) as the sender. Has my system been hacked? Am I now spamming everyone in my address book as we speak?!

Odds are you are not. It's not too difficult to alter the displayed "sender" field to show just about anything you want it to show. The spam engines sometimes do this, though it's not as effective as you might imagine. I don’t know what you're using as a spam filter, but if you add your own address to the block list, you shouldn't be seeing it again.
