This is happening all the time to me in some MMORPGS. Sometimes it's when something dramatic or resource-taxing happens, and other times it's when nothing special seems to be happening at all. Mostly it happens in WoW, sometimes in CoH as well. I called the ISP but they said they couldn't do anything about it, and I'm not really sure if troubleshooting router and modem is something I can go through on my own. Any tips for an inexperienced user?

If this is happening only during online gameplay, odds are it has less to do with your hardware or ISP then with the game itself. Did you have multiple add-ons installed when this started happening, official or otherwise? I would use trial and error to find out which of these is the cause – first you disable them all and try playing that way, then you start turning them back on one by one until the disconnect problem resurges.
