I think it's my video card that's causing this stuff to happen, though I'm not exactly sure, it might be something else. What happens is, when I start a game, it works OK for about half an hour, sometimes even up to a whole hour, but then the system either freezes or crashes. What else could it be, other than the video card?

It sounds like a textbook case of overheating, either of the CPU or the video card. Find an online system temperature test (like for example the one at https://www.micforg.co.jp/en/c_xeon_lga177e.html) and see which, if any, of your components is overheating. My money would still be on the Radeon, because the 9700 series is known for overheating issues.
