I heard my old Radeon 9550 card was actually a down-cut version of Radeon 9600, and so it was possible to overclock it very efficiently … To do that, I had to download some modified drivers for the 9600 version (which I already did), but the next step is kind of confusing to me. I have to somehow edit the BIOS of the card to use new drivers, which will then … tell it that it's actually 9600, and thus overclockable? Am I on the right track here? I have no idea how to do this, so if someone could lend a hand, I'd appreciate it.

Actually, I think you're confusing the issue here, mixing 2 different methods for unlocking the card. What you need to do is EITHER 1) install modded drivers for the 9550 that will unlock it (enable overclocking), OR 2) flash it with a 9600 version, which is itself unlocked, and can be OC-ed. I don't suppose you need help with option 1, so I'll explain option 2: You locate and download the latest BIOS update for the 9600 version, and then you flash the card's BIOS from DOS using the –f switch ("flashrom –f whatrever9600.bin"). I hope this clears it up a little for you.
