I have an RCA cable modem here, and it's all I have to work with, but I just remembered I heard something about major security leaks with the protocol this modem uses… can someone refresh my memory on this? Links, summaries, whatever. Also, workarounds and solutions would be great. Thanks in advance.

Can't google on your own? Here, I'll do it for you. It turns out the RCA modem is very vulnerable to DoS attacks. The reason for this is it uses an internal server of sorts, which can be access form the outside if the IP is known. With most cable ISPs, you'd be safe form this, but someone on the same segment could still target you no problem. Also the RCA seems to default to "public" SMNP, which is just a bad idea.
