| How safe are they, in general? What transaction service do you guys use? I see most people are using PayPal, is that because it's that good or just because it's popular? I'm thinking of getting a PayPal account myself, but I was kind of put off by a friend's tale about a weird case of misplaced order that was charged for and never delivered… |

Was your friend buying over eBay? If so, the fault most likely lies with them, and their non-existent security measures…
I'm a recent PayPal user myself, and the experience has been a mixed bag so far, let me tell you. I use it (like so many other people) mostly because it's so widely accepted, practically any site that charges admission (or whatever) accepts PayPal.
