I took my HD to a friend's machine to help boot it up (her system was screwed up), but now it looks like there's something wrong with my HD as well! Half of the time it is found by BIOS but registered as a "non-system disc", and half of the time it's not detected at all. My friend is afraid that a virus erased her HD and now may have somehow infected mine too… I'm not that superstitious, but would like to know what cold have caused this, other than physical damage during transport. The HD is a 120 GB Hitachi. Thanks in advance.

The most common oversight people make in situations like this one are Master/Slave settings. I imagine you attached your HD by unplugging the IDE cable from her CD drive, yes? If so, you should have changed the jumper settings in the back of your HD, because on that IDE cable it should be set up as a Slave (and back on your machine it was most likely set up as Master). Check the back of the HD, you should see a diagram right above the jumpers, with the positions required for either setting. Just don't forget to reset it when you're done and you need to return it to your own system.
