What I'm trying to do is rip all the songs I want together, as a single audio-book, so that there are no gaps in between tracks, but that I can still skip to the track I want. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that. The thing is I know for a FACT it can be done, because a guy I knew had the exact setup I described on his iPod. The "Join CD Tracks" option doesn't work, it makes just one long non-searchable file. A little help, please? TIA.

I've never tried joining tracks, but to me it makes little sense that it would somehow remove the default option of chaptering the files. Did you check the "remember playback position" in Options? Also, if you're a Mac user, you could try the audiobinder, an OS X application that lets you add bookmarks to any audio file. It works well with iPods, especially when you convert to .m4b.
