I am working on the Internet for a while. Now I have to find some special softwares for my new exam on University. I found those softwares on one FTP site. However, I heard that those sites are loaded with viruses. Is there any special network patches that I should install to prevent virus problems. What should I do?

There are no any special network patches for dealing with viruses. FTP sites are not much or less safer then any other sites on the Internet. If you have Windows XP check do you have Service pack 2? If don't then install it.When you are downloading something from FTP sites, you should have to be prepared. Install some efficient anti-virus softwares. I am personally using combination of AVG and SpyBot search and destroy and I am completely satisfied. Check your firewall is it enabled. It would be best if you can install Sygate Personal firewall. If you do this first, you will not have any problems with FTP sites.
