I got my first USB portable drive the other day, and it was a long time coming… I was surprised, though, to see a note in the back saying that it "supports password protection", because I got no encryption software or anything like that with the drive. How does password protection for portable drives work, anyway?

Well, in general it works much like any other password protection utility: It encrypts your data so that no one else can access it unless they've got a password. (Or unless they feel like brute force breaking through 128-bit protection just so they can see the dirty pictures you've got on that portable drive!)
