This message just popped out the last time I restarted, and I have no idea why. I didn't mess with any configurations, not in the OS nor in the BIOS, and there were no problems before (I shut it down normally). The weird part is, when I press "any key" a couple of times, it seems to find the OS somehow, and boots! I restarted once to test it, and got the same deal. The machine is a dell laptop, the OS is Windows XP. Any suggestions would be welcome…

You're looking at two different options, and neither is pretty. Option one, your HDD is about to go kaput. I that's the case, use the time you've got left to backup all relevant data, then look into buying a new HD. Option two, your master boot record (MBR) is corrupt. That's not quite as bad as option one, but can still be a pain in the ass to deal with. You'll need to use your XP CD to repair the installation and the MBR.
