| I have a computer for last two year. However, now I want to upgrade it and as a first thing I want to buy is a new bigger and faster hard drive. I read many things about that subject but I could not understand the difference between SATA 1 and SATA 2 drives. What is better: SATA 1 or SATA 2? My old Intel IDE drive can't be recognized. Could I install IDE HDD together with SATA HDD? |

| Whenever you are in doubt about power of any computer product, you should choose the bigger number in the product type. It is a joke but that is completely true in this case. SATA 1 drives have a speed of 150 Kb/s (kilobytes per second) and SATA 2 drives have two times bigger speed - 300 Kb/s. However, when you decide about your new hard drive you should first check what type of drive your motherboard supports. If it does not support SATA 2 standard you could not install that type of hard drive. The connector could be the same but it simply would not work. Because your computer is two years old, there is also a possibility that it supports only IDE drives (100 Kb/s). If your motherboard supports both IDE and SATA hard drives there is not any problem about installing them together. Your Intel hard would work just fine. On older motherboards, you might have to install SATA driver before installing the SATA drive. |
