Hello. I am having huge problem with Norton AV updat32.exe. When I run intelligent updater to grab new virus definitions and updates I run into error saying:"updat32.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". Of course, no updates are downloaded and installed. Can you offer me some help here so I do not stay unprotected from viruses?

Updat32.exe is a part of intelligent updater and if it does not work then you can not download updates, as you have already seen. The problem with this file might be corruption. You can try to delete this file from Prefetch folder in C:\Windows. After that Norton will eventually download new and working version of it. If this does not help then you should reinstall Norton Antivirus.
