I'm using Windows 98, and it's completely unpatched (the original edition). I haven't had many security problems (that I know of), but recently I heard that I could fix a major loophole by disabling file/printer sharing. Is this true? If it is, how do I do it? I don't have a network printer anyway, so if I could up the safety this way, it'd be nice, I think. Thanks in advance for your help!

First of all, Win 98 without the service packs and a decent 3rd-party firewall has much bigger security issues than the file sharing thing. I highly suggest you update and add the software I just mentioned. Second, if you still want to disable, here's how you do it, in brief: Right-click "network neighbourhood", choose properties; click "file and printer sharing" next; in the options window, uncheck the boxes next to "file sharing" and "printer sharing", and you're done. There's also a way to keep the sharing options for your LAN and disable them for remote internet machines, but that's a bit more complicated to do.
