Hello.

I'm a complete networking newbie, and I need to put together two computers so that they can share files between them, as well as internet and printer access. I'm being told I don't need a router to do this, as long as there's only two of them - all I need is a crossover cable. Are these expensive? How complicated would it be to set up a network using one?

Thanks in advance for any assistance...

Expensive? Not really, crossover cables are as cheap as they get these days. Make sure, however, that you're actually getting a crossover, not a straight-through cable. See this page for the little differences: http://www.learn-networking.com/ethernet/difference-between-straight-through-crossover-and-rollover-cables.php
As for networking, it's not much more complicated than plugging one end of the cable into the first machine, and the other into the second. The details vary depending on your system.
