Hey, all. I've got a problem with Win XP and a phantom network card. I just installed XP w/SP 2, and hooked it up wirelessly to a D-Link router. Everything works great, except each time I restart, Windows slaps me with a "hardware not functioning" balloon message, showing an Ethernet card (which I don't have, AFAIK) in Device Manager and saying it's cable is unplugged. I have no idea what this means, or how to get rid of the message. Any suggestions?

Phantom devices are just one of the many hallmarks of Win OS. In this case, my bet would be your motherboard has some sort of integrated hardware that gets mistakenly recognized as an Ethernet card (and an unplugged one, of course). I expect it's probably safe to disable it – in device manager, right click it and choose "disable", because if it was a real device, you'd have noticed it not functioning by now.
