| The other day I had to do a re-install of Windows XP (home edition), for reasons unrelated to networking as far as I could tell. It did fix the problem with the registry, but it also caused a new one: apparently I no longer have a NIC, which was there before the reinstallation. The card is an onboard 1394 Net Adapter, and it no longer shows up in the device manager. What do I do now? |

Well, if you haven't already, you should click "scan for new hardware devices" in the Device Manager window, and see if it picks up on anything. It's not likely to work, otherwise it'd probably have found it on its own, but just in case.
When that fails, look through the hardware list for any devices that you can't identify or that have a conflict of some sort (indicated by a yellow exclamation mark). Remove them from the list, and scan again, hoping that it'll detect the NIC this time round.
Finally, contact the manufacturer of your motherboard to see if they have a fix for this problem.
