OK, here's my situation. I have a G-4 Mac, and a really, really old printer that I'd like to hook up. Unfortunately, the printer only has serial and parallel ports, no Ethernet, no USB. I imagine I could still connect these using some sort of a cable that has a USB adapter on one side, and a parallel one on the other… but I don't know what this sort of connector is called. Are they expensive? Also, is there any other way to add this printer? Thanks in advance.

Generally, it's called an adapter. In this case, it's just a USB-to-parallel adapter or cable. You shouldn't have trouble locating one, and they're usually cheap. An alternate method for connecting these two would be a print server. This would cost a little more, but if you're on a LAN (or planning to be) than you'd need a router anyway, and a print server wouldn't be that much of an addition (and way more efficient than cable-linking each machine to the printer's hub).
