I would like to have access to certain files from my home computer when I am not at home. Friend told me that I have to install FTP server on my home PC to gain access to files I would like to download from other computers. Can you explain me what to do in this case?

First you will need to download FTP server and install it. Some of the possible solutions for this are Win FTP server, BulletProof FTP server or Golden FTP. Configure some of these servers according to their manual (although, default installation will work fine for your needs). After this configure your firewall and router (if you have one) to allow access from internet to FTP server. Place files you want in designated folder and you will be able to download them from internet.
