I have a problem with NEC DVD-ROM. All of the sudden it stopped reading DVDs. With CD media everything is fine but it refuses completely to read DVD. Do I have to set something in Windows or something like that or it is a hardware problem? I would be grateful for any suggestion but I fear that new DVD will be the best and unavoidable solution.
Every DVD-ROM has two lasers - one for reading CDs and one for reading DVDs. It seems that your laser for DVD reading is broken and needs to be replaced. If you have warranty then replace it or have it fixed. However, if your warranty has expired than best thing to do is to buy a new one. They are not expensive these days so the price difference between fixing it and buying new should not be big. And it is always better to have newer equipment with warranty if something like this happens again.
