Hi, I'm posting this from my friend's computer because there's something seriously wrong with my own machine. When I try to boot up, the monitor doesn't turn on and I don't think the HDD is working either. I can hear the CPU cooler fan spinning, though. There's no sing of life other than a couple of weird beeps, the same sequence each time. I'm told this is a message of some kind, and I need to decipher it to know what's wrong; is this true? How do I do it, then? Nothing about that in the manual…

The beep codes do indeed provide information about system errors. To "decipher" them, as you so elegantly put it, you'll need to know what brand your motherboard is. If you do, just make a Google search for "beep code ". This should turn up a list of possible beep signals and their meaning; once you find the one you're hearing, you'll have a general idea of what's going on, which you can then use to seek help from tech support or on 'net forums.
