What is this file, and what does it do? I sometimes get an error message saying that Internet Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module mshtml.dll, and I don't know quite what to make of it. I thought it would be prudent to get some information on the file before intervening … and I'm also not sure how to intervene, but that's another topic. So, what do I need to know about mshtml.dll? Is it essential to Windows? Is it an intruder?

That DLL file is related directly to Internet Explorer, and holds some instructions on how to properly decode and display images on a web page. IE being the mess that it is, it's no wonder it's causing you errors. The solution would be to update to a newer version of Windows (XP with SP 2), or, I suppose, to give up on IE and start using another browser instead.
