I bought a new CPU yesterday. However, it is not working in my computer. I thought that it is broken but friend told me that my BIOS is not supporting that fast CPU and maybe my motherboard is overheating. Is my motherboard fan dying on me? He told me that maybe I should update my BIOS. What is BIOS actually used for? Is there a way for controlling motherboard temperature?

BIOS is a collection of system programs, which are stored in the ROM memory of your motherboard. Those programs are startup softwares for any computers. They are monitoring all components of your computer. The BIOS is used for startup settings of your computer. In BIOS, you can find all the basic data about your computer: list of components, speed of CPU, motherboard clock, temperature of system and CPU, cooler speed etc. Motherboard has its own battery to support the BIOS. If that battery fails, the BIOS will loose its content and your computer would not start. You can monitor motherboard and processor temperature in BIOS. You can also set shutdown temperature. However, I do not think that your motherboard can overheat because of new processor or that your motherboard fan is dying. Most likely that your motherboard is simply not supporting your new CPU. If your motherboard manufacturer publishes the newer version of BIOS, you should definitely download and install that version. It would solve your problem.
