I'm using, or trying to use, SUSE and Gnome, but what it says in the thread title happens. Out of scan range, I don't even know what it means. I went into hardware settings and tried lowering the screen resolution, but that didn't help at all. I don't know what else to try. BTW, when I boot into Windows, everything works OK and the resolution is unchanged. Any thoughts?

What video card are you using? I had a similar problem with an old ATi a while ago (though this was neither Gnome nor SuSE, but still…) If I were you, I'd try the OpenSuSE wiki guide to find details on driver installation procedure for your specific card model. Or, if you want to try and fix it yourself, you could edit manually the conf files and specify the details there… though I wouldn't recommend it.
