I have RAID controller on my motherboard and I plan to attach another hard drive in my computer and to connect it and previous hard drive over that RAID controller. I have a dilemma which RAID array configuration I should use. I have heard a lot of opinion, but still I am not sure. My primary concern is data and its safety.

Considering your primary concern, you should connect drives in RIAD 1 array. This will provide you an ability to retrieve your data even if your motherboard fails, because you will have exact copy of first drive on second one. In any other scenario, like RAID 5, you will end up with a lot of bits and pieces of data scattered on your drives and you will be unable to retrieve it if you fail to find exact type of motherboard you were using.
