I need to make a layout for my book. I have never tried this before and I would like to learn how to design layout. I have heard from some people that are doing these things for living that I need some expensive professional tools. If it is true then I will just leave it to the pros. Can you tell me something about it?

If you plan to make layouts for books for living then you should invest in software like Adobe InDesign or QuarkExpress. Otherwise, Microsoft Word will do just fine. It has some very advanced functions like picture positioning on 1/100 inch and similar things that can help you design layout just the way you like.
