They just disappeared! I didn't do anything, I just closed the browser as usual, and then when I restarted some times later, it ate all my bookmarks, just the default ones were left! Even the color scheme is reset to default, it's like all was rewound to some months ago. I've never had this happen on IE, I thought Firefox was less buggy in this way?

Sometimes Firefox can switch to a new user profile on its own. This was a glitch in some older versions, don't know if it survived to this day. Try checking the profile manager, see if it's still your profile that it's using. If it's not, switch back and you're done. If it is, then you'll have to look somewhere else. Check to see when Firefox made the last backup, and restart form there. Or, do a local search for "bookmarks.html", a file which should (?) contain all of your bookmarks.
