On my laptop I have a Lite-On 323 CD-ROM drive, and it's been serving me faithfully for years. Recently, it suddenly started refusing to read any type of media I put in. I didn't know what else to do so I tried updating the drivers, but it said I already had the most up-to-date version there is. So then I uninstalled those and reinstalled them anew, from the web, but it didn't help. Any advice?

Did you try cleaning it? Older optical devices often require cleaning. You'll need to open it up, carefully expose the lens in the middle, and then gently brush it clean using a dry cotton swab and some alcohol. It won't hurt to try using a compressed air cleaner to clean the dust around the lens and everywhere else it might have gotten into.
