All right, I'm now pretty sure that this is an issue with my router, since I've ruled out everything else. What happens is, while I'm online, my IM programs, and sometimes IRC too, get disconnected for no apparent reason, even though the connection is still on (I can still access the web and everything). So I have to restart so much that normal conversation is almost impossible. The strange thing is, this doesn't happen on the other computer in the network (the desktop), only on my laptop. The router is a BEFW1154 Linksys. Any ideas on what I could try next?

How exactly did you come to the conclusion that it's your router, if not all machines on the network are affected? Anyway, the first thing you'll want to try is a firmware update, since that (usually) can't hurt even if your router is OK. If that's not it, I'd scan for spyware or viruses next, though you've probably done that already…
