I'm trying to connect an old printer to my LAN to share, but there's a compatibility issue… the laptop that I need to run it form has an USB port, but the printer has only serial and parallel ones. I'm thinking I need some sort of switch device that has a USB on one end and a serial/parallel on the other… I suppose there most be something like that around, I just don't know where to find it or even how it's called?

Well, if I understand you correctly, you just need a parallel-to-USB cable, nothing more, or possibly an adapter. However, I don't know why you're so fixed on connecting the printer to your laptop? Why not just get a print server and connect it wirelessly to the rest of the LAN?
