My Toshiba Satellite laptop has some LCD issues. The backlight doesn’t work but when I connect it to an external monitor, it is OK. Can such a problem be caused by a faulty cord or power supply or is it just that I’ll have to replace the screen? Is there a way to check the voltage on the LCD inverter? Many thanks!

If you’re not able to see even the faintest image on the screen, then it’s definitely not the inverter. Even though you’re able to get the picture OK on the external monitor, it still may be a graphic card related problem or maybe there’s something wrong with your mobo. I’d certainly take the laptop to the repair shop.
