My system seems to be losing it. Almost every other program I start gets terminated seconds later, and I get an error message stating that it has caused an error in kernel32.dll, and needed to be shut down. Could this be a problem resulting from physically damaged hardware? We had a thunderstorm the other day, and by modem was fragged, and I think somewhere around that time the kernel32.dll thing started happening. Help would be welcome, thanks.

Since you're experiencing the same issue with different applications, odds are that it is indeed caused by damaged hardware. There isn't much left to do but identify what exactly is malfunctioning, and replace it. In my experience, kernel32 problems were most often linked to RAM, though I don't think a power surge could damage RAM before frying your motherboard first (and you'd know if that happened). Still, it's worth a shot – if you have multiple memory sticks, try working with only one to see if the problem persists, than test the remaining ones in the same way hoping to find the damaged one.
