I've never used any, so I don't know.
I'll be getting a laptop some time soon, and it will probably include an ASUS Z833 DVD-RW drive, but I'm not sure how reliable and lasting it is, I don't like using completely unknown hardware… Anyone had prior experience with ASUS optical drives in laptops?

Not as such, no… but to my knowledge there is very little difference in the reliability of the same piece of hardware in a desktop configuration and in a laptop one.
Optical drives these days are cheap and easily replaceable, they're not expected to last too long anyway.
