I’ve been experiencing some strange problems with my system. I run a Windows XP with Service Pack2 on an athlon-based machine with Maxtor 80gb IDE hard disk. Since last week my machine keeps freezing with no particular reason, even while idle. After reboot, the chkdsk runs automatically. I googled some and found out how to locate the CHKDSK log file. However, the stuff I found doesn’t make much sense to me. A bunch of files is listed in “Recovering orphan files” section. At the summary of the log file, no bad sectors were found. Is this a hardware or software problem?

It would be much easier for us to help you if you’d post the entire log file. Thus we’d be able to see which files were recovered. However, you mention that your system crashes unexpectedly. Several things could cause this: bad memory, bad PSU, or even bad HDD. But, let’s hope it’s a software problem – have you installed some new programs lately? Maybe there’s some resident program or virus that’s blocking your machine. Try running a virus scan, or try restoring your system to some previous state using System Restore utility (found in accessories under start menu). If you suspect that your HDD is broken, you can download Powermax (from maxtor.com) which is a diagnostic utility specially designed for Maxtor hard disks. This might give you more information about state of your hard disk’s health.
