I heard about this, but not from what you would call a reliable source. How does this setup work, assuming it's for real? What are its advantages over, say, cable internet? Is radio-internet meant for solo end users, or is it like some wide-scale deal that works for network companies and stuff like that?

Basically, it's the poor man's satellite 'net Razz. You need an antenna tower and a radio modem – it's not exactly aimed at your average user – if you've got something like DSL or standard wireless capabilities in your area, you're probably better off with that… unless you have some very specific circumstances, I wouldn't think too much about radio.
