I heard about this, but not from what you would call a reliable source. How does this setup work, assuming it's for real? What are its advantages over, say, cable internet? Is radio-internet meant for solo end users, or is it like some wide-scale deal that works for network companies and stuff like that?

Basically, it's the poor man's satellite 'net . You need an antenna tower and a radio modem it's not exactly aimed at your average user if you've got something like DSL or standard wireless capabilities in your area, you're probably better off with that
unless you have some very specific circumstances, I wouldn't think too much about radio.
