Hi all,
I'm having trouble with my internet. I work from my laptop, via a crossover Cat5 ethernet cable attached to my home computer, which acts as a gateway to the internet and is connected to my internet box. Both computers are running Windows XP, both have the Windows built in firewall disabled.
Over Easter, this worked fine, and I could use ICS without any difficulties. However, recently one of my family has installed Zone Alarm Pro onto the home computer, and when I plugged my laptop in, I could no longer access the internet. When I look at the status of the two connections, it appears that my home computer is not sending any packets to the internet, however the internet can be accessed perfectly fine from the home computer, it is just the laptop with the issue.
After 2 days of googling for answers, I have tried a variety of things to no avail:
I made sure that in Zone Alarm I had configured the laptop as a Trusted zone, and I also ensured that I have selected the option "This computer is an ICS/NAT gateway" and input the IP address of the ethernet adapter connecting me to the internet. Additionally I have tried adding the IP Address of the DNS server between my home computer and my laptop to the list of trusted zones. Again this didn't work.
Then I tried the "ipconfig /release" command followed by resetting the internet box. I also tried disabling Zone Alarm, but the problem persisted, which leads me to believe that the problem is not actually with Zone Alarm at the moment, but rather something that it may have changed during installation or setup.
If anybody has any suggestions at all I would be very greatful and it would certainly stop me ripping my hair out attempting to resolve this.
Many thanks,
Ian |

New information:
Completely shutting down ZA solves the issue! Beforehand I was just disabling the firewall, by dragging the various sliders to the 'off' position which I assumed was the same thing, but I was obviously wrong, as while that does not solve the problem, shutting ZA down does. It's still inappropriate because I do not really want to be browsing the internet without a firewall! |
