I am trying to run some old DOS based game on XP but I have no luck yet so far. When I run it I can see only command prompt flashing for a few times and then it disappears. Is this a problem with XP not having DOS or am I doing something wrong. Can you point me in a right direction, please?

If you want to run DOS based games (and other old programs, not just games) under Windows XP you have several solutions. You can enable compatibility mode by right clicking executable file that starts the game and choose to run in compatibility mode for, lets say, Windows 95. Other option is to buy DOS emulator like DosEmu. You can then run game inside emulator and it will work fine.
