I want to build server for my home network, just from curiosity and little practice. I want that server to act as a gateway to internet, as a DHCP server and proxy. I have decide to try to configure Linux server first and then, if I do not succeed, to install Windows server. Two other computers will be connected to router and router will be connected to server. My question is how to connect router to server and then server to cable modem when I have only one network card?

Answer is simple. You can not do that with one network card. You will need to add another card. Configure one network card to be used for internal network (connect router to it) and configure second to be used for internet (connect cable modem to it). This is the only way you can accomplish what you are intending to do.
