The problem is a little embarassing, but there’s the deal: I installed Hijact This to get rid of some spyware that I got from P2P programs. Now, instead of just finding the problem an eliminating it, the thing offered me a log of registry entries that it though are “suspicious”, and asked me if I wanted to remove them. So I did remove most of them, stupidly enough, and did kill the spy thing, but now my system is unstable – I get various error messages each startup, some applications don’t work right, and I my firewall gets stuck in memory and won’t be turned off. Anything I can do about this?

When working on the registry, it’s usually best to make backup copies so that you can revert to them when something goes haywire (as it so often does). If you don’t, or didn’t, there are some applications that may or may not help you salvage what you can, but in case the registry turns out to be irreparable, you’ll probably have to reinstall the OS. In the future, make sure your HJT logs are analyzed by people who know what they’re doing – post them to reliable sites only, and take care who you accept advice from.
