I’ve been using Windows XP for a couple of years now, and I have this persistent problem that I don’t quite know what to make of. After a few months of normal work, and no hardware or software “experimentation” at all, my system seems to slow down perceptibly. Everything starts slower, and works poorer, as if I had less RAM or something. So I almost routinely uninstall Windows, and then reinstall it again, and the problem goes away. However, it keeps coming back in a month or two, so I have to reload again. Am I doing something wrong here? Is it my hardware that’s causing this somehow? Any advice would be appreciated.

It’s unlikely that your hardware is causing a performance problem that advances gradually and can be repaired (or reset, at least) by reinstalling the OS. My guess would be that your system isn’t too well protected agianst malware, and that accumulation thereof causes the performance decrease. Get some information on the common qualities of malware in general (search Wikipedia, or something), and then get some software to protect your system and periodically weed through it.
