I'm using Internet Explorer 6 on a Win XP machine (not my first choice, but I work with what I'm given, you know how it goes). Recently a toolbar for something called iSearch appeared in the browser. I'm sure I never installed this myself, but it claims not to be adware as such, and offers a removal tool. I downloaded and installed that, but it sems not to have worked. Anyone heard of this iSearch thing before?

Yeah, a couple of years ago, and it most definitely is spyware (or adware, doesn't matter what you call it). It's pretty old, so most standard spyware removal tools should have it in their dbs. Just download a copy of one, such as Ad-Aware, HiJack This, or Spy Bot, and run a couple of scans.
A tip for future reference: Never ever trust an app that says you need to get another app to uninstall the first one.
