What happens is, when it goes into standby, it doesn't come out again. The screen goes black, and there is no response to keyboard input, but I can still hear the fans working inside. I need to turn it off, but then it won't go back up unless I leave it alone for a few minutes to cool down. Then it works OK again. I disabled stand by, but now it's beginning to freeze even while I'm working! My bother says it must be a bad CMOS battery, but I don't know. Any advice on what I should do?

I don't think a CMOS problem would manifest this way; with that you probably wouldn't be able to boot in the first place. The symptoms you describe sound more like it's overheating, though it's puzzling why it would continue to heat up while in stand by mode as well. You need to run some diagnostic programs (download some off the web if you don't have any) and make note of all issues that it reports, but the main thing here would be handling the temperature. Get some heat monitors, and check out also the one you probably have BIOS, see if the values are too high.
