Well, your first (and only) mistake is that you're expecting Windows tools to do the job they were designed for. It's always better to just go for a 3rd-party solution right from the start. For synchronizing purposes, you should look into Alwaysync (dot com). There's a free trial I think, with a limited number of synchronizations you can do, but if you like it, the full version isn't that expensive either.
