I'm sort of confused here, if you know what I mean, because I'm not sure I'm getting it right: What are the advantages of a wireless router with access points (WAPs) and a 4/port swich setup where (as I understand it) the same functionality is provided? Is there a difference at all, or is it just that the switches are easier to handle, or what?

You seem to be confused by the router/switch/hub differentiation. A wireless router already has a four- or eight- port switch on it, or at least most models do, so you could say that that's easier to handle. But some function not as routers per se, but just as APs these will work only if your DSL modem is also a router, otherwise you're screwed
