How to shut down my external HDD safely?

I just got an external hard drive and I have one simple question about it. Is it safe to shut it down manually with a switch or do I have to use a taskbar icon to do it? I’ve never had an external HDD before so I really have no idea if using switch to turn it off could cause some damage. Thanks.

I’ve had an external drive for 3 years and all this time I’ve been constantly using the switch to turn it on/off. And I didn’t notice that it caused any problems – working as it did the first day I bought it. I think that you have to use the icon only if you want to unplug the USB/FireWire cable from the computer but I’m not sure about this.
