Hello, all.
Could someone please tell me what would be the easiest way of connecting two computers for the purpose of file sharing? I don't need to share internet access, or a printer, or anything like that, just file and folder sharing/exchange. Am I right in thinking I only need to hook up the two via a "crossover" cable, with no router required?

Yes to that last bit, if your computers are nearby and all you want is file sharing, a single crossover cable will do it for you. However, you will need to make some software adjustments so that the two machines can see each other and communicate appropriately. What OS are you running? Some version of Windows or another, I presume?
